How to Say Good Morning to Someone Who Is Already Asleep

A small art of leaving greetings in the dark so they are waiting at the other person's dawn.

How to Say Good Morning to Someone Who Is Already Asleep

On a ship, the watch changes at four in the morning, and the man going off duty leaves a note for the man coming on. Nothing grand. Course held, wind backing, coffee in the thermos. I always thought those notes were the most affectionate form of writing I ever practised, because they were addressed to someone who was still asleep and written for the moment he would wake.

That is the whole trick of the good morning across time zones. You are not saying it to a person who is awake. You are leaving it where they will find it, like a lantern on a step. So write it for their dawn, not yours. Mine usually go out around midnight, when I am winding down, and I picture them landing on a pillow six hours away, quiet as a gull settling on a mooring post.

Keep it small and particular. Skip the paragraph of feelings; nobody wakes up wanting an essay. Say the grey cat was on the windowsill again. Say the bakery downstairs opened with a smell that made you think of her. A single true detail is worth ten declarations, because it proves you were paying attention while she was away, and attention is the real currency between distant people.

Sound travels better than text at the right moment. A thirty-second voice note, recorded while the kettle works, carries your breath and your tiredness and the clink of your own morning, or evening, or whatever it is where you stand. I have come to love the slightly rough edges of a voice that has not been tidied. Smoothness is for brochures. Closeness is a voice with a yawn in it.

On the evenings when I have nobody to write to, I sometimes open TheFriend and listen to a character talk, just for the shape of a voice in the room. They are AI characters, and I never forget it, but a voice that answers in good humour is still better company than a silent kitchen. Think of it as a radio in the galley, not a replacement for the crew.

So tonight, leave the lantern on the step. Write the small note, send the rough-edged voice, and go to bed knowing there is something waiting for them at the far end of the dark. They will wake, read it, and smile before they have even found their slippers. That is the whole voyage, really. You cross the night so that someone else can step out into a morning that already has you in it.

If you want a voice to keep you company while the other side of the world sleeps, TheFriend has characters who are happy to talk into the quiet hours with you.
